Birds without Specific Gender Names

For many birds, especially those where males and females look very similar, the English language does not have common, specific words for the genders. In these cases, we simply use "male" and "female". Examples include:

  • Crow
  • Eagle
  • Hawk
  • Heron
  • Penguin
  • Raven
  • Vulture

For others, like the falcon, a specific name exists for the male (Tiercel), but the female is often just called a 'falcon'.

Common Questions Answered (FAQs)

Q1: Why do so many birds use 'Cock' and 'Hen' for their gender names?

This is a linguistic convenience, similar to how 'bull' and 'cow' are used for many large mammals. "Cock" and "Hen" are the ancient and well-known gender terms for the domestic chicken, a bird humans have interacted with for thousands of years. As people needed to refer to the gender of other, similar birds (like pigeons, sparrows, pheasants), they simply extended these familiar terms to them rather than creating unique names for every species.

Q2: What's the difference between a Peacock and a Peafowl?

Peafowl is the correct name for the species as a whole. Because the male, the Peacock, is so famous for its vibrant and massive tail feathers, its name has become the popular term for the entire species. The female is correctly called a Peahen, and she has much more subdued, camouflage-colored feathers.

Q3: What is the difference between a 'Cock', 'Rooster', and 'Cockerel'?

They all refer to male chickens. Cock is the traditional, and still common (especially in British English), term for an adult male. Rooster is more common in American English for an adult male. A Cockerel is a specific term for a young male chicken that is less than one year old.

Q4: Is there a bird without gender?

Biologically, almost all birds have male and female genders. However, from a language perspective, many birds do not have unique gender-specific names. For instance, while a crow is biologically male or female, we don't have a special word for it; we just say "male crow" and "female crow." So, in a linguistic sense, many birds are "without a specific gender name," even though they possess a biological gender.
